2013 – Jake James

Jake-Head

The Spring Conference was once again held at Kootenay Forge, and we were treated to a demonstration by Jake James of Victoria, BC. He created a 4′ high abstract sculpture, relying on the use of the power hammer to draw out the long stems, and Tim did a great job as a striker punching holes for the joinery. The finished piece was a work of art and demonstrated  Jake’s great skill as a blacksmith.

Fall 2013

Hammer-Making-5-lr

Mr. Paul Reimer himself.

The Fall meeting in 2013 was held at Paul Reimer’s shop in Cranbrook, BC. The theme was ‘Make your own Hammer’. The correct steel and handles had been purchased, and we just had to do all the work.

Punching the holes in the hammer heads required working in pairs, and even so it took a long time. The punch/drift could not be left in the hole very long as it would get too hot and get jammed in the hole. It was a fun experience and everyone took their own hand-made hammer home.
